Retro Gaming Meets the Open Road: A Tinkerer’s Dream
In an era before subscription services and complicated infotainment systems, car screens were meant to be simple and enjoyable. That’s why a retro gaming enthusiast and tinkerer, Eric, took matters into his own hands to create a one-of-a-kind gaming experience in his work van. He shoved a Nintendo 64 (N64) console into the dash, complete with four controller ports, a stock power-on LED, and a cartridge slot designed to look like a playful face.
A True Labor of Love

The main challenge was separating the cartridge slot from the motherboard, which required desoldering and reconnection of the pin connector. With the power supply jumpered and the console disassembled, the rest of the installation was "pretty straightforward." An inverter powered the system, allowing Eric to enjoy his favorite N64 games on the move.

But Eric didn’t stop at just an N64. He also installed a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in a cubby near the base of the center stack. This added a new level of excitement to road trips, as Eric and his coworkers could take turns playing classic NES games.

Though he eventually left the company and didn’t reinstall the original head unit, the van remains a testament to the power of creativity and passion for gaming.
