Google Play Unveils Exclusive ‘Verified’ Badges for Secure VPN Apps Now

Google Play’s "Verified" Badges for VPN Apps: A Game-Changer for User Privacy and Safety
In a move that’s expected to significantly impact the VPN app landscape, Google Play has introduced "verified" badges for VPN apps. These badges are specifically designed for apps that prioritize user privacy and safety, aiming to help users make more informed choices when browsing the Google Play store.
But what does it really mean to be "verified" on Google Play? According to Google, a VPN app that’s been deemed "verified" has gone above and beyond in terms of adhering to the Play safety and security guidelines. The app must have successfully completed a Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA) Level 2 validation, ensuring that it’s secure, trustworthy, and follows best practices.
So, how does an app become "verified"? To be considered for the "verified" badge, a VPN app must meet a set of criteria, which includes:
- Completing a Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA) Level 2 validation
- Having an Organization developer account type
- Meeting target API level requirements for Google Play apps
- Having at least 10,000 installs and 250 reviews
- Being published on Google Play for at least 90 days
- Submitting a Data Safety section declaration, opting into:
- Independent security review, under "Additional badges."
- Encryption in transit.
Currently, three VPN apps have received their "verified" badges: Nord VPN, hide.me, and Aloha Browser. As a result, you’ll see these badges proudly displayed on their page on Google Play, making them stand out from the crowd.
With this new initiative, Google is making it easier for users to spot VPN apps that prioritize their safety and privacy. For developers, it’s a challenge to meet the rigorous standards required to earn the "verified" badge. But for users, it’s a welcome move that promotes transparency and trust in the VPN app ecosystem.
