Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s Fragile Gorilla Glass 2: Uncovering the Surprising Truth Behind Its Scratch-Prone Design

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: The Durability Debate Continues

The new Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra boasts the exclusive use of Gorilla Armor 2 glass, which claims to survive drops from 2.2m (7.2ft) onto concrete. But how accurate is this claim, and is it truly a step forward in terms of durability?

The Verdict is Out: Scratch-Tested by JerryRigEverything

Zack from JerryRigEverything has put the S25 Ultra to the test, and the results are revealing. In a recent video, he showcased the phone’s vulnerability to scratches, revealing a Mohs level 6 score. But what about its predecessor, the S24 Ultra? Let’s take a trip down memory lane.

A Compare and Contrast: S24 Ultra Durability

In a previous durability test, the S24 Ultra showed scratches at a level 7. If you pause the video at the 1:58 mark, you’ll notice the display exhibits noticeable marks from the level 6 pick. However, the reformulated Gorilla Armor 2 glass on the S25 Ultra suffers more damage from the same level 6 pick. Is this the result of making Armor 2 more drop-resistant? Harder glass may be more resistant to scratches, but it’s also more prone to shattering upon impact. On the other hand, glass that can absorb shock without shattering is softer, making it easier to scratch.

Balancing Durability and Perception

Manufacturers face a delicate balance in crafting their products. The perfect blend of durability and anti-reflective properties is crucial. While Gorilla Armor 2 still offers the latter, Samsung has addressed some of the S24 Ultra’s display issues, such as graininess at low brightness levels, in the S25 Ultra.

The Verdict: A Mixed Bag

While Gorilla Armor 2 boasts improved drop resistance, it’s clear that it’s not a straightforward story. The sacrifice in scratch resistance might be too great for some users. As always, the choice ultimately lies with the consumer.
