Vintage Military Inspiration: Buck Mason’s Sidewinder Rib Ringer Tee
Buck Mason’s latest t-shirt design is a testament to the enduring influence of vintage military uniforms on modern menswear. The brand’s new Sidewinder Rib Ringer Tee draws inspiration from the classic knit of a US Army “skivvy tee” invented a century ago.
History of Skivvy Tees
The original skivvy tee was designed with a rib-knit wool that provided breathability and moisture regulation, making it the perfect base layer for soldiers in various climates. When temperatures rose, servicemen would remove their uniforms, leaving only the base layer, effectively giving birth to the modern t-shirt.
By World War II, the wool ribbed knit was replaced with cotton jersey fabrics, which have remained the standard for tees to this day. While jersey knits offer a soft texture and easy production, some features were lost when ribbed fabrics were abandoned, such as the unique texture and breathability.
The Sidewinder Rib Ringer Tee undergoes a double-dying process, resulting in a sun-faded texture. (Buck Mason)
